What's the point of this website?

This website was created to draw attention to shops that leave their lights on overnight when nobody is around.

Why should shops turn off their lights?

We should all be doing all that we can to save energy. A shop that leaves its lights on at night is wasting energy. Saving energy is a vital step in the fight against catastrophic climate change.

Surely shops leave lights on for a reason?

Possibly to attract shoppers? There are few sober and and serious shoppers around in the middle of the night. We should put environmental concerns above mere window shopping.
Maybe it's for security reasons - so we can spot thieves? A thief in a shop with its lights off would be much easier to spot as they would need a torch to see what they were doing. The night security guards that patrol Old Bond Street would spot these torch lights more easily in the dark.

Why pick on Old Bond Street?

We have to start somewhere. If you travel around London at night you will see that a large number of shops and offices leave their lights on.
Oxford Street for example is wasting hundreds of tonnes of carbon each year because of unnecessary lights left on.
Old Bond Street specifically was chosen as it is so well known and often associated with the habits of big spenders. Those who have the available income to spend on luxuries more often than not contribute an above average amount of greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere.

I own or run a shop on Old Bond Street and would like to send feedback to this site.

Any feedback (good or bad) will be gratefully received and posted on the individual page for your shop. Please mail just0is@hotmail.com

How is it decided whether the lights of the shops on this site are on or off?

Trips to Old Bond Street where made in the middle of the night and a survey of lighting taken for every shop. Shops were graded by whether they have on all lights, just window lights or no lights.
